About: Andy Karras

Hello from Karras Farm.

My name is Andy Karras Owner/Operator and I thank you for taking the time to read our blog.

We run a mid sized dairy sheep farm and specialize in pure bloodline East Friesian Sheep. I am a third generation sheep farmer and the first from my heritage to bring these beautiful animal to the United States. My father, grand father and great grandfather have been in the dairy sheep business since the late 1800's in Greece. I was raised with these docile animals and have a true passion for them. While I have plenty of real life experience to draw from in caring for these animals I also committed myself to being fully trained in the field. I completed five years of Veterinary training in Greece and spent two years in a USDA approved slaughter facility. My dreams of operating a nationally renowned sheep farm in the United States have led me to providing a blog where I can share ideas and stories with other like minded people. Please feel free to comment, email or call me if I can assist you in any way.

Sincerely,

  1. I am interested in learning more about how I can incorporate Friesian ewes into my flock to help supplement litters of more than 3 born to my Finnsheep ewes. I believe there is an overlooked opportunity to utilize Friesian ewest beyond just milking.

    1. Hello Jeri,

I have been asked this very question a few times over the years. To plainly answer your question, you could incorporate East Friesian sheep to milk supplement the larger litters. The unintended consequence is a prolonged lactation period and the necessity to milk the EF after the lambs have been weened. If you ran an exceptional East Friesian ram through your existing Finnsheep you could expect a 70% milk increase with your Finnsheep/EF cross ewes which would likely require milking.

Thanks for the question and best wishes to you in 2013!
